    TEN DAYS IN

    Kraków Poland

Life on the streets of the Medieval city

    Takeoff

The hundreds of pigeons resident in Kraków's Rynek Główny (Main Square) are a tourist attraction in their own right, fed by visitors to the plaza.

    Carriage Driver

Rynek Główny is also home to elegant white horse-drawn carriages, catering to tourists who can take a ride around the Square or further into the Old City.

Sitting is a key component of life in Central Kraków: sitting with coffee, sitting with obwarzanek (the iconic Kraków 'bagel') or simply sitting.

    Fire Juggler

By night, the Main Square comes alive with street performers both local and visiting. This group of young men were from the US and on their way on foot across Europe, stopping in cities along the way to busk for currency to support their travels.

    Kazimierz

Shop frontages in Kazimierz, the historic Jewish Quarter, these days associated with indie galleries, vintage clothing stores and trendy bars.

    The Old Market

Stary Kleparz ('Old Kleparz') is the oldest continuously operating market in Kraków, bustling daily with shoppers out for fruit and vegetables, fresh baked goods, meats, clothing and housewares.

    The Golden Hour

In mid June, for a short time each evening, the sunset beams across the Main Square and cuts through the east-west doorways of the central Cloth Hall, illuminating those in its path.

    The Head

A man is glimpsed through the eyes of Eros Bendato — the giant head statue — which sits on its side at the foot of Wieża Ratuszowa, the Town Hall Tower.

    Noc Teatrów

Once a year, the streets of Krakow become the stage for dozens of spectacular theatrical performances. This is Noc Teatrów, the Night of Theatre. This image shows part of a pyrotechnic performance titled The Breath of the Orient by Mandragora Fire Theatre, telling the Aladdin-like story of a young man who summons a fire-juggling genie.
